Hiroshima

A book-cover design and two inside illustrations for “Hiroshima” a book by John Hersey.

One illustration depicts one of the survivors, who was stuck under piles of books and pillars as several bookcases fell on her. The other is a month after the Atomic Bomb has been dropped and the character returns to the centre of the city to find there are plants growing out of the ashes of the ruins.
I drew my illustrations in black and white and used pointillism in the background to symbolise the destruction, ash and ruins of the attack. I then digitally coloured the circular illustrations with monochrome red-tones , symbolising the Japanese flag.illustratiehiroshimaklaeurillustratieHiroshimacirlecover copy 2
