I was commissioned by QVC Jewellery UK to create a range of 2D paper-craft sets for their latest jewellery photoshoot campaign. Working with director Stephen Lally and photographer Sara Lucas Agutoli, I created a series of large, colourful flat-lay paper illustrations of some funky alien space ladies, somewhere lost in time between vintage fashion, retro hairdo’s and early 90’s aesthetic pattern design.
Real jewellery was added to each paper-set: rings placed on top of paper fingers, necklaces draped across busts and bracelets wrapped around 2D paper arms.
All the elements were art directed separately in a way so that animator Micheal Lomon could create seamless animations for QVC’s social media channels.
The initial concept & work in progress
My initial paper-collages & sketches used to pitch the project idea to QVC:
Work in progress:
All elements were drawn and cut completely by hand.
The sketching stage was done to life-size, and my assistant and I used our hands/arms as references for different compositions, angles and body poses.
The glamour alien faces were designed with artistic license…
Sadly no Aliens were available to pose for us.
Thanks for reading !
Special thanks to my assistant Renuka Ramanujam for helping me draw & cut dozens of paper hands, by hand.
